Steel thickness & type for Damascus blades - Hot Work
Posted October 21, 2019. I am new to making Damascus blades. 15N20 seams to be the desired steel for the silver appearance in the Damascus pattern. Other carbon steels such as 1080/1084, O1, W1, 1095 are all listed as good steal to partner with 15N20. Looking thru the knife blade material suppliers shows various thicknesses of each of these steels.

Posted January 24, 2017 (edited) I think that you will find that most will prefer 1080/1084 & 15N20. 15N20 is basically 1075 plus 1.5% nickel. (You want some nickel in one of the two steels for contrast.) These two steels weld easily and are very compatible.

Mar 5, 2015. #12. Damascus can be as good as anything else..depends on what its made from and how its heat treated..O1/L6 is just crazy awesome stuff then your standard 1095/15n20 is as good as any regular high carbon steel.. cable Damascus can be good stuff too..cable is graded.

2011年1月3日 · Posted January 8, 2011 (edited) Ive fitted liners to a couple or 3 damascus rings, simply put I roll a piece of 925 silver into a ring (a touch smaller in diameter than I need)solder it shut, anneal & pickle. Then expand it (rollers or mandrel) so its a press fit into the steelwork, protruding a couple of mm each side.

Many choose 1084 because at times 1095 can get a bit fussy on the heat-treat and temper. With that being said, canister damascus is like cooking, a great time to experiment.

Doesn't hold up any better (in fact could hold up worse based on steels required to make it) and doesn't stay any sharper. Best bet if you want a tough blade for bushcrafting is to go for 3V, AEBL, M4, CruWear, Magnacut, A2, O1, S7, etc.
