If for no other reason than as so many have suggested, I'd get 16 Gb so you have some elbow room. My new M1 Mac mini performs several functions much slower than my i3, which I write off to less memory and not yet optimized software.

With the current new OS support window of 6 years, it's going to be 2027 for M1 vs 2029 for M3. Might be 2028/2030. So, all the future-proofing with the M1 16GB goes out of the window.

My M2 mini will easily run a couple of Safari tabs, several Microsoft Edge windows and tabs, Firefox, Mail, Calculator. Memory pressure usually stays in the 40% range, memory usage is 6GB out of 8GB.
