Studies indicate that docusate also stimulates secretion of water, sodium, chloride and potassium and inhibits the absorption of bicarbonate and glucose in the jejunum portion of the small intestine, which allows the bowel contents to retain more fluid. Docusate may be administered orally or rectally.
