Des Moines' new police chief is Michael McTaggart, a 25-year veteran of the department he will now oversee. City Manager Scott Sanders and Mayor Connie Boesen announced the hire at a news conference Wednesday. The Des Moines City Council unanimously approved the appointment at a special meeting.
Des Moines crews battle house fire on city's south side
Crews were called to a house fire on the south side of Des Moines Thursday afternoon. You can see more from the scene in the video above. A call came in around 2:20 p.m. Thursday for a fire at a residence in the 4300 block of Southeast 15th Court. Crews arrived to find heavy black smoke in the back of the home.
