Nintendo, the Japanese video game titan, has opened its first-ever museum today in Kyoto. It is housed in a refurbished factory and aims to highlight the company's extensive history, spanning from traditional playing cards to iconic games like Super Mario.

The company began life in 1889 producing Japanese playing cards called "hanafuda" as well as Western-style ones. Nintendo launched its first home video-game machines in 1977.

Spread across three main buildings, Japan’s new Nintendo Museum takes visitors through the company’s 135-year history with an exhaustive exhibition that includes rare consoles and prototypes.
