According to NASA, a partial lunar eclipse happens when a portion of the moon enters Earth's shadow. During this event, the moon will appear to have a "bite" taken out of it, as part of its surface darkens when it moves through Earth's umbra, the darkest part of its shadow.

A partial lunar eclipse will coincide with this week's Harvest Moon, which also happens to be an exceptionally bright and large supermoon.

A partial eclipse of the supermoon was visible across the East of England on Tuesday night. This month's full moon, known as the Harvest moon, is the second of four supermoons expected this year. Full supermoons occur when the orbit of the moon is at "perigee" - the closest point to Earth in its orbit - which makes the Moon appear bigger and brighter in the night sky.
