Several North Carolina towns saw historic rainfall Monday. One street in particular recorded more rain than the area has likely seen in 1,000 years.

The rain from the system had moved into southeast Virginia on Tuesday. Along North Carolina’s Outer Banks, the storm closed vulnerable coastal highway North Carolina 12 on Ocracoke Island and threatened several homes in Rodanthe, where erosion and rising sea levels have destroyed more than a half-dozen beachfront homes this decade.

Hard rain of 1 foot and more inundated the southeastern coast of North Carolina on Monday as a storm moved ashore and aimed for the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.

The storm did flood several blocks of Carolina Beach, North Carolina, and bring widespread wind gusts over 40 mph. North Carolina's governor urged people to stay off the roads in stormy conditions.

The beaches where swimmers should avoid are in New Hanover, Carteret and Brunswick counties after areas were heavily flooded on Monday, officials said.

An unnamed storm that impacted the eastern Carolinas with over a foot of rainfall caused significant flooding and triggered water rescues. Flooding resembled impacts that usually occur during hurricanes.
